2,4-dimethylpentane is an organic compound with a molecular formula of C7H16. It is an isomer of octane, one of the possible structures for the hydrocarbon with this molecular formula. It is an aliphatic hydrocarbon with a branched structure, as two of the carbon atoms in the pentane molecule have two methyl groups each attached to them.
2,4-dimethylpentane has a boiling point of 109 °C and a density of 0.688 g/mL at 25 °C. It is a colorless liquid with a characteristic hydrocarbon odor.
The compound is mainly used as gasoline or fuel additive for its high octane rating (about 94). It is also used as a solvent for oil, wax, and polymer, as well as in the production of chemicals such as pentanols, pentyl acetate, and pentylamine.
